Celebrating our unsung heroes

20th of October 2022 – 20/10/2022
Everything about the Clean Hospitals Day initiative.

Why was the Clean Hospitals Day created ?
This global awareness raising campaign was created to bring international attention to the need for an increased focus on healthcare environmental hygiene.

to highlight its importance in patient safety. It is also a call to join Clean Hospitals in celebrating and empowering all of the environmental service workers and management working to improve environmental hygiene every day.

For whom are we celebrating?
This day is all of the people working in or involved at any level in healthcare environmental hygiene. This means all environmental service workers, hospital stakeholders, management and healthcare workers. It is also for patients, because patients are the people most affected by a contaminated healthcare environment.

What is the objective of this initiative?
Clean Hospitals Day aims to increase the global visibility and recognition of the importance of healthcare environmental hygiene, provide stronger focus and guidance, encourage the creation of global standards for environmental hygiene.

Our Vision
Is to protect patients, environmental service workers, healthcare workers, and the natural environment through improved environmental hygiene. We believe that by making care facilities a cleaner place, healthcare systems are better equipped to protect their inhabitants.

Our Ambition
Is to make the difference by speaking in the name of the whole healthcare environmental hygiene sector. Clean Hospitals Day as well as the whole Clean Hospitals initiative aims to become the leading voice in healthcare environmental hygiene; through its stakeholders, academic experience and the science-based and transdisciplinary approach used. This includes generating conducting high-quality studies and reviews to generate evidence and guidance to decision makers and all relevant parties.

Scope
This global awareness raising programme will address all the components of healthcare environmental hygiene including the cleaning and disinfection of surfaces, air control, waste management, water control, automated disinfection technologies, laundry, digitalization and much more.

Our mission
Clean Hospitals is an organization that connects stakeholders from all over the world and enables them to improve healthcare environmental hygiene together. The role of this project is to increase awareness and consequently lead to a change in environmental hygiene culture, by providing guidance and knowledge and support in adoption of proven innovations. This will enable the implementation of global standards for environmental hygiene, to protect the lives of patients, healthcare workers, and visitors with the aim to reduce healthcare associated infections and the mortality and suffering they cause.

Why we are in the position to do what we do
Clean Hospitals is a coalition of international stakeholders who work explicitly to promote healthcare environmental hygiene. This initiative was born from a lack of environmental hygiene awareness and guidance around the world and the urgent need for an international initiative. The chair of Clean Hospitals, Prof. Dider Pittet, already changed the world with his work in showing how improved hand hygiene can prevent infections. He gave the formula for alcohol based handrub to the World Health Organization patient-free, and revolutionized the field of infection prevention and control. Prof. Pittet launched the SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands annual global campaign in 2009, a natural extension of the WHO First Global Patient Safety Challenge: Clean Care is Safer Care program (2005), leading to millions of lives saved across the world.
